Discontinued: This course has no new intake. This information is provided for continuing students
This program has been replaced by C104A Master of Engineering Science (Civil). There are no further intakes into C104 as from 2011 onwards. The Master of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) forms the final stage in a four-stage nested suite consisting of: Graduate Certificate of Engineering (Civil) (C101)Master of Technology (Civil)Master of Engineering (Civil) (C103)Master of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) (no further intake)Master of Engineering Science (Civil) The Master of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) has been designed for students who wish to enhance their knowledge and undertake continuing professional development in the field of civil engineering. The program has an applied industry focus and presents subjects relevant to professional practice and contemporary research in this field. The core units of study within the program have a technical focus that can be complemented with a range of technical or management-focused elective units to suit the needs of the individual student. Importantly, many of the technical units of study have a sustainability theme which is the great challenge for the delivery of infrastructure in the 21st century. The program aims to produce graduates who will be able to lead and apply advanced technical and management skills to the design, procurement and maintenance of infrastructure projects. The program will also provide a pathway for graduating students to undertake PhD research in one of the specialist areas of civil engineering.
At program completion, graduates should be able to: Apply fundamental knowledge of engineering, mathematics and scienceUse the techniques, skills and modern tools in civil engineering to practice effectively in industryIdentify, formulate, solve and evaluate engineering problemsDesign and conduct experiments as well as to analyse and interpret dataDesign and develop engineering solutions to meet desired needs within realistic economic, environmental, social, ethical, health and safety, construction, and sustainability constraints Undertake research independently and develop clear report writing skillsFunction and communicate effectively in multi-disciplinary teamsIdentify and practice professional and ethical responsibilityRecognise the need for and to engage in lifelong learning
Swinburne's Civil Engineering programs are a nested suite, offering students the opportunity to exit at the Graduate Certificate, Master of Technology, Master of Engineering or Master of Engineering (Honours) stage. The Master of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) is comprised of 200 credit points. In addition to completing the 150 credit points in the Master of Engineering (Civil), students must complete HES7601 Major Research Project (50 credit points). Students must also attain either: An average grade of 70% over the final 100 credit points of the program, orAn average grade of 75% over the final 50 credit points of the program (ie. the 50 point major research project)
All units of study are 12.5 credit points except for the 50 credit point Minor Research Thesis.Discipline-specific units: HES6129 Nonlinear FEM for Materials and Structures HES6175 Project Costing HES6175D Project Costing HES6178 Sustainable Buildings HES6179 Transport Planning, Modelling and Economics HES6180 Advanced Concrete Design HES6181 Strengthening and Monitoring of Structures HES6192 Infrastructure Deterioration Modelling HES6194 Geotechnical Design HES6195 Building Design HES6196 Integrated Water Design HES6197 Principles of Sustainability HES6CME Coastal and Maritime Engineering (not running in 2013) HES6DRE Dredging Engineering HES6PAN Port Access and Navigation HES6PSD Port Structural Design HES6PHE Port and Harbour Engineering Recommended elective units HBN500 New Venture Development HES6174 Resource Planning and Management HES6176 Environmental Sustainability in Construction HES6176D Environmental Sustainability in Construction HES6177D International Construction HES6690 Engineering Project Control HES6690D Engineering Project Control HES6720 Risk Perception and Analysis HES6727 Introduction to Risk and Due Diligence HES6791 Project Management HES6793 Construction Law HES6793D Construction Law HES6795 Construction Site Operations HES6797 Location-based Management for Construction HES6798 Procurement and Risk Management in Projects HIR506 Technology Management Research unitsHES6198 Research Paper an HES7601 Major Research Project (50 credit points) orHES7605 Research Design and Methodology (Distance) andHIT9010 Research Methods Note: units of study from other postgraduate programs within Swinburne maybe approved by the course co-coordinator, as recommended elective units, on a case-by-case basis. Units of study are either taught on-campus, distance or intensive mode*. Please refer to the program planner to check for the delivery mode of specific units. *International students are required to study full-time and on-campus.
The skills attained from the program should assist graduates gaining employment in a range of industries including consulting engineering, construction, local government, and public and private infrastructure owners.
The program will provide the following generic attributes: Providing career orientated education Developing links with industry and knowledge transfer Undertaking research which is applied and relevant to the needs of industry Developing lifelong learning skills Establishing international links including opportunities for collaboration with Swinburne’s other campuses
The admission requirements for Master of Engineering Civil (Honours) consist of: A Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) degree (or equivalent) and successful completion of the graduate certificate unitsA Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) degree (or equivalent) with either honours or at least two years relevant industry experience, orQualifications and experience which in the opinion of the selection officer are of an equivalent standard for the nominated program. The pathway for such students would be through satisfactory completion of the graduate certificate units of study before converting into the master program
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training. Further details for students considering Higher Education courses: www.future.swinburne.edu.au/pathways/rpl/higher-ed
The indicative course tuition fee is $16800 for 2010, based on one year full time load (or 1 EFTSL). The total tuition fee is dependent upon the combination of units of study selected by the student. Fees are reviewed each year and may increase. The Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) is a suite of income-contingent loans for Australian citizens and holders of Australian permanent humanitarian visas. FEE-HELP is available to eligible fee-paying undergraduate and postgraduate students. It provides students with a loan to cover their tuition fees (lifetime maximum $85,062 from 1 January 2010). The FEE-HELP limit is indexed on 1 January each year.Note: New Zealand citizens and holders of other Australian permanent resident visas do not have access to HELP loans. These students must pay their student contributions or tuition fees up front without a discount. For further information on your support and study options visit the 'Going to Uni' website at: http://www.goingtouni.gov.auFor information about Swinburne's fees visit: http://www.swinburne.edu.au/fees
