This program aims to provide students from a wide range of disciplines and business experiences with concepts, frameworks, research and analytical skills to enable them to operate confidently and effectively in a global environment, characterised by constant environmental change and requiring flexible and innovative responses. In the design and development of this program we canvassed industry perspectives on program design and its relevance to contemporary organisational challenges. A common theme linking units in the degree is that of business sustainability in a globalised environment.

The degree consists of units from business and other disciplines. These units are grouped into four key areas supporting sustainable commercial and business development:
  • Commercial accountability in a global environment
  • Economic drivers and consequences in a global knowledge economy
  • Managing people in constant change environments with a sensitivity to social and psychological implications of change and through innovative organisational design, systems and learning cultures
  • Integrative approaches for leveraging from information and communication technologies (ICTs)

A graduate from this program at master level should have built on their understanding of social, political, economic and environmental complexity in global commerce and its impact on organisational practice, and be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of institutional and organisational trends concerning adaptive strategy, corporate social responsibility and public and private sector responsibility for developing sustainable commercial practices and infrastructure in a rapidly changing global environment
  • Appreciate, communicate and practice effective decision-making processes in complex environments (including in areas such as business development, strategic alliances and in developing appropriate organisational culture)
  • Critique processes for organisational innovation in different contexts
  • Recognise and manage the tensions between flexibility and accountability
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the social and psychological implications of managing people in new and innovative structures and environments
  • Demonstrate advanced business research skills to plan, research, design, and implement a workplace project requiring broad managerial insights and actions with sensitivity to organisational strategy and culture
  • Complete organisational projects requiring advanced research, analysis, evaluation and decision making, such as response to tender requests, new business development initiatives, change management projects, or other business sustainability related initiatives
  • Demonstrate collaborative behaviours to generate creative solutions to organisational, community, and business sustainability related issues
  • Provide evidence of useful outcomes based on multidisciplinary approaches

The Master of Commerce consists of 150 credit points, made up of 12 units of study (each 12.5 credit points), and must include LMC601 and LMC701 plus at least three additional Stage 7 units plus any other units drawn from any stage.

Students wishing to do the business research unit MTB830 will require approval from the program coordinator.
