Note: This course commences Semester 1, 2012 and replaces the course Graduate Diploma of Technology (Business Systems Design and Management).

The Graduate Diploma of Technology (Business Systems) provides advanced knowledge in the area of information technology (IT) along with the necessary business and organisational knowledge relevant to applying IT within organisations.

(International students are required to study full-time and can undertake this course only if studying in a country other than Australia.)


Upon successful completion of the Graduate Diploma students can expect to have the ability to:
  • apply knowledge of the key issues, tasks and roles in an IT environment to business outcomes;
  • demonstrate an understanding of team dynamics and other factors responsible for building social capital and apply this learning to achieve specific outcomes;
  • participate effectively in leading teams and managing stakeholders in the context of complex environments;
  • design and execute projects;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the role of electronic media and communication in organisations and apply this learning in context;
  • identify business objectives and develop procedures and workflows in collaboration with key stakeholders;
  • apply IT strategies to business functions (e.g Logistics and Supply Chain Management).


Units from the Graduate Certificate of Technology (Business Systems) plus four units x 12.5 credit points [50 credit points] comprising of four units from a choice of core and elective units.


To be awarded the Graduate Diploma of Technology (Business Systems) students must complete the requirements for the Graduate Certificate of Technology (Business Systems).

The degree provides a body of knowledge and skills, when combined with the background experience and knowledge of the student, for the following roles:

  • IT management
  • general business management
  • operations management
  • customer relationship management
  • logistics and supply chain management
  • IT implementation management
  • resource management
  • change management
  • IT industry analyst
  • chief information officer
  • business systems planner

Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Advanced level certificate at the postgraduate level (EAP 5: PG-70%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 575 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Computer-based) minimum score of 232 (with Written Writing score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 90 with no band less than 20.

Entry to the Graduate Diploma is available to applicants who have completed an approved undergraduate degree in IT or to applicants who have completed the Graduate Certificate of Technology in Business Systems Design and Management, or approved equivalent. Students who are admitted with advanced standing will be required to complete a minimum of 50 credit points of study in order to qualify for the Graduate Diploma of Technology in Business Systems Designs and Management.
