The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology offers an entry-level program of study in information technology (IT) for people who wish to add IT to their range of skills and knowledge.

The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology consists of eight units of study. This program is particularly suitable for graduates in disciplines such as business, arts, sciences and engineering. The program offers a general introduction to IT with an emphasis on web applications development or business information systems. Students study six mandatory skills areas that cover the core body of knowledge for an IT professional - introductory IT, programming, database, internet technologies, project management, and information analysis. Two electives are also chosen, allowing students to gain specialist skills in areas of interest.

The graduate diploma offers entry level study in information technology to students with a degree in any discipline. No prior knowledge of information technology is assumed.
 
Students study mandatory areas which cover the core body of knowledge for an IT professional including programming, database, requirements and analysis, project management and internet technologies. A choice of electives allows students to specialise in a particular area which addresses the differing needs of students.

The graduate diploma is part of a nested suite of programs, which includes the Graduate Certificate of Information Technology (I071) and the Master of Information Technology. There are a number of entry points depending on previous academic studies and work experience.
 
Students may exit with a Graduate Certificate in Information Technology (I071) on completion of four units of study. Exemptions cannot be credited towards the graduate certificate award.
 
The graduate diploma consists of 100 credit points, equivalent to one year of full-time study, or two years part-time. Students undertake six core units of study (75 credit points) and two elective units (25 credit points) for a total of eight units. Some options exist in the core units of study. A maximum of two exemptions (25 credit points) is available in the graduate diploma program.
  
After completing the requirements of the graduate diploma, students may progress to the Master of Technology (Information Technology) with the addition of four further advanced units of study, or the Master of Information Technology with eight further advanced units of study.
 
The information technology program is available in both full-time and part-time* (5.30pm to 9.30pm) modes. Part-time mode includes the possibility of studying one unit of study at a time. Entry is possible in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 and evening classes are available in most units of study.  
  
Please note: some units of study are subject to quotas and minimum enrolment requirements. Not all units of study are available every semester, and changes in program structure occur from time to time.
 
*International student visa holders are required to study full-time.

Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Advanced level certificate at the undergraduate level (EAP 5: UG-65% ); OR, Obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.0 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 550 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Computer-based) minimum score of 213 (with Written Writing score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 80 with no band less than 20.

Students with a recognised bachelor degree or graduate diploma in a computer science, information systems or information technology should refer to the Master of Information Technology.
