The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology (Professional Computing) is part of a nested suite of programs, which includes the Master of Information Technology (Professional Computing).

The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology (Professional Computing) is a program of advanced studies in IT with an emphasis on enhancing the ability of graduates to gain professional employment in the IT industry. It is designed for those who have undertaken previous university-level studies in IT, equivalent to at least one and half years of an Australian bachelor degree. Students are recommended to select units of study to prepare themselves for further studies in one of the following specialisations offered in the Master of Information Technology (Professional Computing) program (see 'Major Specialisation' below).

The Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies encompasses all of the major disciplines in ICT including computing, software engineering, information systems and telecommunications. This unique structure provides students with a broad range of study choices, enabling selection of units of study across all ICT disciplines.


The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology (Professional Computing) consists of eight units of study (100 credit points), equivalent to one year of full-time study. The program is run in two stages: Stage 1 is foundation studies and Stage 2 provides advanced studies.
 
Postgraduate units of study in the Faculty of ICT are categorised as Level 2 or 3. Stage 1 of the program involves four elective Level 2 units of study (50 credit points).

Stage 2 of the program involves four elective units of study (50 credit points) comprising of at least two elective Level 3 units of study (25 credit points) and no more than two elective Level 2 units of study (25 credit points).

Subject to satisfactory completion of at least 37.5 credit points (three units of study), students will have the opportunity to transfer to the Master ofInformation Technology (Professional Computing) before completion of the Graduate Diploma of Information Technology (Professional Computing).

The program is accredited with a standard full-time* study pattern of 37.5 credit points (three units of study) each semester with options for study in summer and/or winter terms, allowing for the 100 credit point program to be completed over one calendar year.
 
Please note: Some units of study are subject to quotas and minimum enrolment requirements. Not all units of study are available every semester, and changes in program structure occur from time to time.
 
*International students holding a student visa are required to study full-time.

The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology (Professional Computing) allows students to select a broad program comprising 100 credit points of units of study, providing prerequisite requirements are satisfied. Students may also choose units of study to prepare themselves for further studies in one of the specialisations available in the Master of Information Technology (Professional Computing) program. Current specialisations in the Master of Information Technology (Professional Computing) are:

This Graduate Diploma of IT (Professional Computing) provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to undertake a variety of roles in industry. Graduates can expect to find employment in a wide range of IT positions from technical (web development, internet technologies and programming) to business-oriented positions (business analyst, database and process modelling.)


Application for this program has been made to the Australian Computer Society (ACS) for Associate Level accreditation.

The program articulates into the Master of IT (Professional Computing), which is accredited at Professional Level by the ACS.


Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Advanced level certificate at the undergraduate level (EAP 5: UG-65% ); OR, Obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.0 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 550 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Computer-based) minimum score of 213 (with Written Writing score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 80 with no band less than 20.

Admission to the Graduate Diploma of Information Technology (Professional Computing) is available to applicants who have completed a recognised bachelor degree that includes studies in information technology comprising at least one third of the degree.
