Note: This course commences Semester 1, 2012 and replaces the course Graduate Certificate of Technology (Business Systems Design and Management).

This program is designed to suit the needs of a wide range of participants from different industry backgrounds. Its purpose is to extend the student’s knowledge, skills and strategic approach to the practice and development of information technology resources to meet their relevant industry requirements.
 
Business professionals may seek an understanding of human-computer interaction and its association with web design in order to enhance their competitive edge. Non-information technology professionals may choose to complete this certificate as part of the master degree in order to seek an alternate career path or to gain knowledge of how information technology may be utilised in their chosen business domain.
 
(International students are required to study full-time and can undertake this course only if studying in a country other than Australia.)


The key objective of the Graduate Certificate of Technology (Business Systems) is to provide a breadth of knowledge in the specialist area of Information Technology in the context of business support. The Graduate Certificate provides specialist knowledge of the principles underlying Information Technology and its role in organisations along with appropriate skills.

Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate students can expect to have the ability to:
  • identify and critique key issues, tasks and roles in various Information Technology environments;
  • design and develop basic software;
  • understand and apply technical processes to problem solving;
  • analyse and critique the impact of various organisational functional roles and cultures on collaborative practice;
  • identify stakeholder perspectives and their role in project development;
  • participate effectively as a team member in a development environment;
  • communicate effectively within and across business and technical teams;
  • evaluate traditional and contemporary approaches to systems analysis and design methodologies.


To be awarded the Graduate Certificate of Technology (Business Systems) students must complete four units x 12.5 credit points [50 credit points] comprising two core and two elective units.
 


To be awarded the Graduate Certificate of Technology (Business Systems) students must complete the following combination of units.
 
Two core units:
Information, Organisations and Society (MTB510)
Systems Development (MTB520) 
Plus
two of the following elective units:


The degree provides a body of knowledge and skills, when combined with the background experience and knowledge of the student, for the following roles:

Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Advanced level certificate at the postgraduate level (EAP 5: PG-70%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 575 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Computer-based) minimum score of 232 (with Written Writing score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 90 with no band less than 20.

Entry to the Graduate Certificate is available to applicants without a degree but who have significant relevant business experience, normally at least four years or applicants with an approved undergraduate degree in a non-IT discipline from a recognised tertiary institution or approved equivalent. As no prior knowledge of IT is assumed, applicants with a degree in IT will be considered only if that degree was obtained several years ago, and/or that degree has little overlap with the curriculum of the chosen stream. Students who are admitted with advanced standing will be required to complete a minimum of 25 credit points of study in order to qualify for the Graduate Certificate of Technology in Business Systems Designs and Management.
