Course Description:
The Graduate Certificate of Management Studies gives students a fundamental grounding in business and management subject areas, demonstrating the integrated nature of business management, developing their research, analytical, critical thinking and presentation skills. The Graduate Certificate in Management Studies is also the entry award into the Master of International Business, Master of Strategic Foresight and Master of Social Investment and Philanthropy. The Graduate Certificate in Management Studies consists of two double units. The first is the Integrated Management Module. This double unit gives students a fundamental grounding in business and management subject areas, demonstrating the integrated nature of business management. By the end of the unit, students will have an understanding of all the principal areas of business including accounting principles, marketing fundamentals, basic human resource management, supply chain management and logistics, and the economics of demand and supply. The unit is designed around the oil industry. The second double unit is called Business in Practice and requires students to apply the fundamental grounding in business and management subject areas they gained in the Integrated Management Module to their own organisation or a case study organisation of their choice. By transferring the knowledge to a different context and applying it to real-life business problems, the students will develop their research, analytical, critical thinking and presentation skills, and thereby develop the skills necessary to be successful in postgraduate study. (Students holding an international student visa are required to study full-time and on campus and cannot take the other study modes.)
Aims & Objectives:
At the completion of the program, it is expected that students will be able to: Independently connect examples, facts, or theories from more than one field of study or perspective Demonstrate understanding of the core elements of accounting, marketing, HRM, logistics and economics in an applied and integrated manner Synthesize in-depth information from relevant sources representing various points of view/approaches Develop a range of potential solutions to organisational problems taking into account ethical considerations Effectively select and develop examples of life experiences, drawn from a variety of contexts (e.g. family life, artistic participation, civic involvement, work experience), to illuminate concepts/theories/frameworks of fields of study Independently adapt and apply skills, abilities, theories, or methodologies gained in one situation to new situations to solve difficult problems or explore complex issues in original ways Evaluate changes in own learning over time, recognizing complex contextual factors (e.g. works with ambiguity and risk, deals with frustration, considers ethical frameworks) Develop learning and research skills necessary for postgraduate study
Course Structure:
The Graduate Certificate of Management Studies forms the first stage and is the entry award for the Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CMEI640M). The Graduate Certificate of Management Studies consists of two core double units of study; Integrated Management (HBG701) and Business in Practice (HBG702). Students will undertake the units concurrently: Part-time students* will normally attend weekly evening classes and complete both units over two teaching periodsFull-time students will normally attend full day classes and complete the units in one teaching period To qualify for the award of Graduate Certificate of Management Studies, students must complete 50 credit points comprising two compulsory units (25 credit points each). *Students holding an international student visa are required to study full-time and on campus and cannot take the other study modes.

This program is ideal for graduates in non-business subjects who wish to develop a general business and management understanding in order to prepare them for, or progress their career, in a business organisation. It is also a good qualification for people who want to start their own business, or who are running their own business and want a better understanding of business processes and practices.

Entry Requirements:
The standard entry into the Graduate Certificate of Management Studies CMMS440 is either: i) Completion of an appropriate undergraduate qualification at a credit level (GPA 2.5, GMAT 550 or equivalent) from a recognised institution, orii) Candidates who do not hold an appropriate qualification but who have significant relevant work experience (usually at least three years) and evidence of academic capability

Credit Transfer:
Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted ‘credit’ and/or entry into the course with ‘advanced standing’. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Recognition of Prior Learning:
