The Graduate Certificate of Business Management (Executive Administration) has been specifically designed to meet the needs of office staff who want to develop high-level knowledge and skills in the professional area of executive administration. The graduate certificate is an attractive alternative for those with significant work experience in this area, but without previous formal undergraduate qualifications.

The program is targeted at:
  • Individuals currently working in a secretarial/office environment who wish to expand their knowledge and skills to enable promotion to personal/executive assistant positions
  • Executive assistants wanting to strengthen their knowledge and skills, and gain formal recognition of these skills by attaining a postgraduate specialist qualification
  • Graduate and undergraduate students in related studies wanting to broaden their knowledge and skill set by attaining a higher qualification
This is a postgraduate program accredited by Swinburne’s Faculty of Higher Education, Lilydale and delivered by Swinburne's TAFE School of Business. Graduates achieving a credit average, or above, may be eligible for entry to the Master of Business Management .

The program aims to provide high level business knowledge with practical skill applications that are relevant to executive assistants working directly for senior managers.

The three core units address sound management principles applicable to complex environments, high level administration skills and knowledge, and communication and office project management skills.

A diverse range of units are offered for the elective component, which allows students to specialise in a particular skill or interest area.

At the completion of the program it is expected that graduates will be able to:
  • Understand the role of the executive assistant and the value of  personal profile in that role
  • Work in, build and manage a successful team
  • Use tools, resources and software (Microsoft Project) to plan and manage an office project
  • Make business presentations and speeches with confidence and professional effect
  • Use and manage office information and technology
  • Apply the principles of business ethics to the workplace
  • Use explorative research skills to identify sources of information for key business issues
  • Understand the impact of organisational structure, design, culture, and environmental constraints on the modern workplace
  • Investigate the value of sound planning, decision-making, leadership and communication skills in achieving business goals

The course is available on campus and online.

The Graduate Certificate consists of four units of study (subjects). All four units must be satisfactorily completed to attain the Graduate Certificate award. Each unit involves 36 hours of class time, usually studied for three hours online for one semester, or on campus as fortnightly Saturday workshops over one semester.

The Graduate Certificate is available part-time with all classes scheduled outside of normal working hours. Graduate Certificates may also be studied full-time depending on demand. Note that international students must study full-time.

The Graduate Certificate can be undertaken as the first stage of the Graduate Diploma of Business Management, which involves a further four units of study, or the Master of Business Management , which involves a further eight units of study.
