MF90N

Study Mode Study Level Duration
Part-time (day) Postgraduate Minimum 2 years duration

Enrolment into MF90N is through the FEIS Student Admin Office. Please do not submit a 'Direct Entry' Application. Only students admitted into an Aviation Bachelor Program are eligible to apply.

MF90N Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) students accept that if they cannot access Oxford Aviation Academy's Services for any reason (outlined in Oxford Aviation's Training Services Agreement) they will be in-eligible to graduate or get an award for the MF90N program from Swinburne University of Technology.

This program information is provided for prospective students. Current students, please refer to your program planner and Unit Search. Program planners are available on the Faculty web site under Information for Current Students

The program is designed to provide the specific vocational practical training skills in the professional area of a commercial pilot.

It is to be undertaken concurrently with either Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation/ Bachelor of Commerce.

The first unit of study delivered will be a preparatory unit addressing practical skills for the Private Pilot Licence. Subsequent units of study will address the vocational requirements of a Commercial Pilot. Each unit of study will build on the knowledge already gained in each stage throughout the concurrent bachelor course.

Undertaken concurrently with the bachelor program, graduates will attain both the theory and practical training to meet the qualifications required of a commercial pilot seeking employment with an airline after undertaking a cadet pilot program, or as a commercial pilot in the general aviation sector.

The programs will meet the Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences objectives for undergraduate education by:
  • Providing career-oriented and real world learning
  • Developing links with industry and knowledge transfer
  • Developing life-long learning skills
  • Providing educational opportunities for international students
  • Providing pathways education.

Students undertake 50 credit points minimum from the Aviation Practical and Additional Aviation Practical groups, comprising:
  • 37.5 credit points from Core Aviation Practical Studies
  • A minimum of 12.5 credit points from Elective Aviation Practical Studies, with the option of undertaking additional electives from this group
Additionally, units of study from the Optional Additional Aviation Practical Studies may be undertaken to address substandard competency standards at the completion of the allocated training hours.

Note:
Students must maintain an enrolment in either the Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation/Bachelor of Commerce. It is expected that students (on completion of both their Bachelor degree and Graduate Certificate) will graduate simultaneously from both programs.

All units of study are 12.5 points unless noted otherwise. All units are taught by Oxford Aviation Academy, Moorabbin Airport.

The Additional Practicum units allow provision for a student to undertake extra practicum tuition and testing if they have not met the required competency standard in the scheduled hours of training as described for the related core practicum unit (#).:

A student who has not met the required competency standard within the scheduled minimum hours of training in the Optional Additional Aviation practical unit, may elect to repeat the unit. By undertaking the appropriate optional unit of study, which can be undertaken more than once if required, will result in not having to repeat the original associated core practicum unit.

A student may only enrol in the optional units of study if they have previously enrolled in the associated practicum unit. For example, a student may only enrol in HES2951 Commercial Pilot Licence Additional Practicum if they had previously enrolled in HES2950 Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 2.

This will assist with student progression and avoid the student having to repeat the training associated with the original practicum unit again, and provide the opportunity for the student to have the necessary additional supplementary training in a timelier manner.

The practical training will meet the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) requirements for a Commercial Licence (Aeroplane) and Single Engine Command Instrument Rating. Additionally, the proposed course will have a number of electives such that a student may undertake additional CASA recognised ratings such as Flight Instructor and Multi Engine Gas Turbine.
