Note: This program will be replaced by the Graduate Certificate of Professional Accounting from Semester 2, 2009.

The Graduate Certificate of Accounting is designed for students who wish to obtain a sound introduction to concepts and procedures in accounting and finance. The program develops the technical, practical, analytical and creative skills necessary to support a successful career in accounting and finance. It provides an entry level into tertiary study and the ability to obtain a tertiary qualification for appropriately qualified candidates. Successful completion of any four of the 12 core Master of Accounting units of study (subject to meeting co-requisite requirements) completes the graduate certificate stage of the nested program. Further study will lead to the Graduate Diploma of Accounting and either the Master of Accounting (Graduate Entry) or Master of Accounting (Non-Graduate Entry).

At the completion of the program graduates can expect to:
  • have broadened their skills already gained in an undergraduate course or have developed vocational knowledge and skills in a new professional area
  • have developed the basic technical and practical skills necessary to support a successful career in accounting and finance
  • be equipped with suitable skills to continue with further postgraduate study in accounting

Students normally enrol in four units of study per semester for full-time study or two units of study per semester for part-time study, undertaking the equivalent of three hours per unit of study per week.

Full-time students have classes on weekdays for 12 weeks each semester.

Classes for part-time students commence at 8.00am on Saturdays and are taught in 6 hour blocks in alternate weeks over a 12 week semester. Examinations ar conducted at the end of the semester in the formal University examination period.

Students holding an international student visa are required to study full-time.

The graduate certificate requires satisfactory completion of four units of study from the following list (subject to pre/co-requisites):

The accounting program provides an avenue for graduates to achieve professional recognition and help fill the shortage of professionally recognised accountants. As many candidates may already be established in a business career, the key vocational outcomes will arise from better current job performance together with new opportunities opening in the accounting and finance areas.
