Course Description:
Students will be taught best practice in landscape design and sustainable landscaping. You will learn that, as a landscape designer, your role is to create landscapes that facilitate positive social interactions, benefit the environment,and are economically viable. These designs will be following the first principle of sustainability: to meet the needs of the present without compromising the those of future generations.
Aims & Objectives:
Graduates of the course will be able to meet the future industry and community requirements to effectively work as landscape designers with a thorough understanding of sustainability. Graduates will be encouraged to challenge the existing perception of sustainable design. They will be encouraged to be innovative and to re-think what constitutes a sustainable landscape.
Course Structure:
To be awarded a Diploma of Sustainable Landscape Design, a candidate must successfully complete six core units and three elective units of competency. The part-time course involves evening online sessions, plus three to five face-to-face full day seminars at Hawthorn per unit of competency, plus occasional Saturday workshops at Wantirna. Full-time students attend Prahran two days per week, plus occasional Saturday workshops at Wantirna.

Career Opportunities:
Landscape or garden designer with your own business, work as a landscape or garden designer in another practice, project manager implementing sustainable practices, sales consultant related to sustainable landscape products, sustainability consultant for industry and/or local council.
Entry Requirements:
Students are expected to: be able to use a personal computer, including basic word processing, spreadsheet, and email programs and internet search engines;have a demonstrated capacity in literacy and numeracy;have demonstrated interpersonal communication skills.
Credit Transfer:
Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. Recognition of Prior Learning:
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.
