You will learn application skills in prosthetics, special effects and stage photographic, bridal, period, television, film and fashion make-up, as well as hairstyling, facial-hair manufacture and wig styling and maintenance.

This course aims to provide:

  • training in all aspects of make-up beginning with Morphology, the study of bones and muscles of the face
  • study of theatre make-up, covering straight, ageing and character work
  • period make-up, both in theory and practice, working through the decades to 1990s
  • the use of special effects make-up for film and television eg. ageing, wounds etc
  • prosthetic work including plaster impressions, clay modelling, the manufacture of latex pieces and bald caps for film & television
  • the manufacture of facial hair pieces, moustaches etc
  • maintenance and care of wigs and hair pieces
  • business management for the make-up artist and on-set protocol
  • study of script analysis, continuity for film and television
  • an understanding of the principles of colour theory, painting and sculpture in art techniques
  • hairstyling
  • wig dressing/styling


This full-time course has an average workload of four days per week (24 hours per week). Total student contact hours include lectures, practical work, flexible learning delivery and research time. Students undertake work placement* as part of the learning experience of the program (out of class time) approx 70 hours.
 
* International students will achieve the work placement through on-campus activities such as working on the make-up requirements for Performing Arts and Costume productions and performances.

CRT402A Collaborate in a creative process
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to collaborate in a creative process.

MUP401A Design, apply and remove make-up

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to design, apply and remove standard make-up for productions in the screen, media and entertainment industries.
 
BPMG510A Manage projects
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage a straightforward project or a section of a larger project. This unit addresses the management of projects including the development of a project plan, administering and monitoring the project, finalising the project and reviewing the project to identify lessons learnt for application to future projects.

IND401A Provide services on a freelance basis
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to operate as a freelancer within the creative arts industry. Success as a freelancer requires a high level of self motivation and discipline, an ability to develop industry networks and an entrepreneurial attitude when pursuing work opportunities. Freelancers are usually responsible for negotiating their own contracts.

BREL401A Establish networks
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop and maintain effective work relationships and networks. It covers the relationship building and negotiation skills required by workers within an organisation as well as freelance or contract workers.

CRT301A Develop and extend critical and creative thinking skills
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop the habit of thinking in a more creative way.

BDES402A: Interpret and respond to a design brief

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to interpret and creatively respond to a design brief through the production of work.

MUP502A Design and apply special makeup effects
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to design and apply special make up effects services for productions in the screen, media and entertainment industries.
 
BPMG408A Apply contract and procurement procedures
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist with contracting and procurement for a project. It covers identifying procurement and contract requirements, assisting with contractor selection, conducting contracting and procurement activities and assisting with finalisation of activities for the project.

MUP404A Style wigs and hairpieces for performances or productions
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to style wigs and hairpieces for productions in the film, television and live entertainment industries.

MUP403A Style hair for performances or productions
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide a range of current and period hair styles for productions in the film, television and live entertainment industries.

BCMM401A Make a presentation
This unit covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to prepare, deliver and review a presentation to a target audience.

MUP503A Create prosthetics for special makeup effects
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to create prosthetic pieces for special make up effects in productions for the screen, media and entertainment industries.

MUP402A Maintain makeup and hair continuity
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide continuity services for make-up and hair in the screen, media and entertainment industries.

MUP501A Design and apply specialised makeup
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide specialised make up services for productions in the screen, media and entertainment industries.


Employment may be found in the film, television, theatre, photographic and fashion industries.


The course is delivered from the Film, Television and Multimedia Package and is a nationally accredited qualification.

Satisfactory completion of the Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 4: Pathways -60%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.
