The Diploma of Screen and Media is available in two streams: Film and Television and Integrated Journalism.

This course forms the first year of a two year program, the second year being the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media

Film and Television

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who possess a sound theoretical knowledge base and use a range of specialised, technical or managerial competencies to plan, and produce work for film, television and the digital media industries.

Integrated Journalism
Students will develop a general understanding of the relationship between the media and community, society and industry, while learning practical production and presentation skills in multi-platform (radio, TV, print and online) journalism. The course covers new digital production techniques, writing persuasive copy, conducting interviews, producing and coordinating television programs and exploring issues on radio.


Film and Television
This course aims to train students to:
  • demonstrate an understanding of a broad knowledge base incorporating theoretical concepts in relation to film production;
  • apply sound technical skills and knowledge to the production of film;
  • transfer and apply theoretical concepts and/or technical or creative skills to a range of situations;
  • work successfully in a group to plan and produce film.
Integrated Journalism
Students develop a general understanding of the community, social and industry related aspects of the media and practical production and presentation skills in multi-platform (radio, TV, print and online) journalism.


Students must complete five core units and ten streamed units. This course forms the first year of a two year program, the second year being the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media.

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to collaborate in a creative process.

BSBOHS509A  Ensure a safe workplace
Establish, maintain and evaluate an organisation's occupational health and safety (OH&S) policies, procedures and programs in relation to the film industry work sites.
 
BSBPMG510A  Manage projects
Manage a straightforward project or section of a larger project. This unit addresses the management of projects including the development of a project plan, administering and monitoring the project, finalising the project and reviewing the project.

BSBREL401A  Establish networks
Develop and maintain effective work relationships and networks. Relationship building and negotiation skills required by workers within an organisation as well as freelance or contract workers.

Film and Television
Employment may be found in the film and television industry or as independent producers, directors, editors and special effects developers.

Integrated Journalism
Upon successfully completion students will be able to work as a journalist within radio, TV and online.  Students will also be able to write online articles and undertake photo journalism assignments within their chosen field.

Satisfactory completion of the Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 4: Pathways -60%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.

Folio and Interview.

Folio Information

When selecting pieces for your folio, choose a suitable amount for viewing within ten minutes.

Your folio may contain:
  • a show reel (VHS or DVD); and/or
  • a minimum of 5 recent works in any two (or more) of the following media: painting, drawing, photography, animation, storyboards, sound, visual concepts, 3D, digital media or print; and/or
  • scripts or treatments of recent works (these works may or may not have been produced) Note: you also should have pre-production (development) work/folio for at least one piece of finished work.
Very large 2D and/or 3D works should be presented as photographs or slides.  A G5 Macintosh computer (with CD-ROM, DVD-ROM) and PC Laptop (with CD-ROM, DVD-ROM) will be available for the presentation of screen based digital works.  Please no Mini DV tapes.
