The Diploma includes remedial massage techniques with particular emphasis on human anatomy, orthopedic assessment, biomechanics, sports injury management and clinical placement.
Course Description:
You will learn a variety of remedial massage techniques to help clients in pain or with muscle and soft tissue problems. These techniques will include trigger point therapy, myofascial release, cross tendon technique, active and positional releases, muscle energy technique and manual lymphatic drainage. You will also study human anatomy, orthopaedic assessment, biomechanics and exercise physiology and choose electives in sport injury management, massage for people with disabilities or in palliative care. Mentored clinical placement and supervised on-campus clinics are structured within the course to increase your treatment skills prior to graduation. On completion of the course you will be eligible to gain WorkCover registration and treat clients seeking private health fund rebates.
Aims & Objectives:
This course will build on the skills you gained at Certificate IV level and prepare you to work as a competent Remedial Massage Therapist. You will learn to assess a client's massage needs and plan and conduct a remedial massage treatment based on knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, using a wide range of soft tissue massage techniques. You will learn to work safely and ethically in health care and wellness environments, to communicate effectively with clients and other health care workers, and to operate your own massage practice.

Career Opportunities:
On completion of the Diploma you will be eligible to begin working as a Remedial Massage Therapist treating clients with injuries and soft tissue dysfunction, to gain WorkCover registration and a provider number for those seeking health fund rebate.
Professional recognition:
This qualification enables graduates to apply for Remedial Massage Therapist membership of the Australian Association of Massage Therapists (AAMT), Massage Assoctaion Australia (MAA) and Association of Massage Therapists (AMT). You can apply for a Workcover provider number and a provider number to treat clients seeking rebates from private health funds.
Entry Requirements:
Completion of the 14 pre-requisite units from the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice are required for entry into the Diploma of Remedial Massage. Applicants must have a Police Check prior to commencement of course.
Credit Transfer:
Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Pathways (articulation):
An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain subject requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted.
