This is an intensive and practical course in which students will gain a range of skills and knowledge including web, graphics, animation and games design using industry standard software applications.
 
Interactive Digital Media is a two year program consisting of two qualifications:
Students who successfully complete the Diploma of Interactive Digital Media are eligible to apply for the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media.


This course aims to give students the broad-based skills and specialisations necessary for initiating and developing an electronic media career path and to work with digital technologies within the arts, screen design and media industries.


Students must complete 14 core units.


BCMM401A - Make a presentation
Covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to prepare, deliver and review a presentation to a target audience.

REL401A - Establish networks
This unit covers the building of relationships and negotiation skills required by workers within an organisation as well as freelance or contract workers.

BOHS509A - Ensure a safe workplace
This unit covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to establish, maintain and evaluate an organisation's occupational health and safety (OHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area in accordance with OHS legal requirements.

DIG502A - Design web environments
In this unit the design is focused on how applications and technologies are combined and used, and the way in which interactive content is accessed by users.

DIG506A - Design interaction
This unit covers the knowledge required to design the interaction for interactive media products.

BDES402A - Interpret and respond to a design brief
This unit covers knowledge to interpret and creatively respond to a design brief through the production of work.

BDES403A - Develop and extend design skills and practice
This unit extends the skills as a practising designer. Designers must continually refine, develop and evaluate their own conceptual and technical skills. Research, experimentation and collaboration are key factors in this process.

BCRT403A - Explore the history and social impact of creativity
This unit applies to individuals who develop and apply knowledge of the history of creativity at a broad rather than deep level. Understanding the concept of creativity, how creative people think and how creativity has been applied through history can provide individuals with inspiration and ideas to take into their own work and lives.

ANM503A - Design animation and digital visual effects
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to design animation and digital visual effects for screen productions.

ANM502A - Create 3D digital environments
This unit covers the use of skills from reference material and established designs to create 3D environments using the software application most appropriate to the production. 3D environments need to meet technical and design specifications as well as being efficient, reliable and to scale.

ANM401A - Prepare 3D digital models for production
This unit covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to prepare 3D digital models for a range of contexts.

PPM404A - Create storyboards
This unit covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to create storyboards. The creation of storyboards is a critical skill in the design and development of a broad range of digital content including video, film, animation and interactive media.

BCRT 402A - Collaborate in a creative process
This unit covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to collaborate in a creative process.

BPMG 510A - Manage projects
This unit covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage a straightforward project or section of a larger project. This unit addresses the management of projects including the development of a project plan, administering and monitoring the project, finalising the project and reviewing the project to identify lessons learnt for application to future projects.

Satisfactory completion of the Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 4: Pathways -60%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.

Folio and Interview (applicants will be required to attend an interview and present a folio of work).

Folio information
Ensure all pieces of work are presented cleanly with minimum embellishment. Do not pare down too much - we want to see all that you have achieved. Organise the folio logically and present in a professional manner.
 
Your folio may contain:
  • Drawings, illustrations and doodles
  • Graphic design
  • Digital Media
  • Animation
  • Web page design
  • Sound design
  • Process (back-up) workbooks – we want to see how you work through and record the process
  • Other work such as painting, printmaking, photography, model making/sculpture, costume, jewellery, etc – we are interested in the breadth of your visual acumen
  • Any personal art/design not made through course work – what particularly interests you?
