This course provides the skills to build and manage network systems in a business environment. Emphasis is placed on practical skills using a hands-on approach, including an industry-based work placement. Areas of study include network security, internet infrastructure, routing and network design, SQL database management and Linux, Microsoft and Novell operating systems. You may also have the opportunity to study the IT Essentials and CISCO CCNA programs.

This course provides the skills to build and manage network systems in a business environment. Emphasis is placed on practical skills using a hands-on approach, including a industry-based work placement. Areas of study include network security, internet working, SQL database management, Linux, Microsoft and Novell operating systems. Students may also have the opportunity to study the IT Essentials and CISCO CCNA programs. In the final semester, student groups complete major projects*.
 
Students can choose to concurrently undertake the Diploma of Information Technology (Systems Administration) and gain both diploma qualifications at the end of the second year**. Prior to that, students may be eligible to receive the Certificate IV in Information Technology (General).
 
On successful completion, students can also apply for higher education courses in IT, Network Design and Security, Telecommunications and related courses. For details of the possible exemptions available in Swinburne courses, visit our Pathways website.

This course prepares students for employment in network administration, system management, helpdesk and IT support. Alternatively, students are well prepared to continue to degree studies in relevant areas of computing.

Satisfactory completion of the Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 4: Pathways -60%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.
