Students learn to create and execute design concepts efficiently and economically. They learn how to use traditional media and computer technology to assemble ‘camera-ready’ and digital artwork for graphic reproduction and web based outputs.

Web design and production is also covered in this course. Major study areas include: design, design theory, digital art and design, graphic arts, design process, drawing techniques, typrography techniques, design theory practice, graphic pre-press, design concept, digital imaging and print processing.


The course aims to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to qualify to work as graphic designers across a wide range of graphic design industry occupations.


To be eligible to receive the Diploma of Graphic Design, participants must successfully complete 25 units, including 18 core units and seven elective units.
 
Units of competency are delivered in several modes that include stand-alone and holistic delivery and assessment in classroom, flexible WebCT and practical work placement delivery. In Year 2, students are connected with industry host employers for a practical work placement program to prepare the students for employment opportunities*.
 
*International students are required to study full-time and will undertake supervised Industry-based projects on campus in the second year. They will undertake at least 20 hours of supervised training per week throughout this program.

Career opportunities exist within advertising agencies and the graphic design and finished art studios that service them. Employment can also be found in a number of other areas of the industry, such as publishing (newspaper and magazines), retail advertising, large corporations, printers, film and television production houses, educational institutions and government departments.
 
Note: International students will benefit from the Pathway arrangements available between this course and the Bachelor of Design (Graphic Design) offered by the Faculty of Design.

Satisfactory completion of the Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 4: Pathways -60%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.
