This course provides students with the necessary skills to diagnose, analyse and evaluate faults in automotive vehicle systems. Students acquire the skills and knowledge to successfully work with engine management systems, steering, suspension and braking systems, transmission and driveline systems, and hybrid vehicle systems.
 
The student will also be competent in reporting analytical findings, making repair recommendations, repairing faults, evaluating repair operations, and developing modifications for electronic systems.
 
(Students holding an international student visa are required to study full-time.)


There are two programs associated with this qualification, a part-time program for local students and a full-time program for international students.
 
It is expected local students will complete the program by attending classes one night per week during each term for approximately four years. International students will gain this qualification by attending classes for three days per week in one semester.
 
The course is comprised of one core unit and 11 elective units, chosen in consultation with the automotive industry to meet the current skills requirements of industry.

Graduates may find employment in roles such as automotive technician, automotive specialist, advanced diagnostic technician, automotive systems designer, workshop manager or diagnostic specialist.

Satisfactory completion of the Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 4: Pathways -60%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.
