This course replaces Diploma of Accounting (FFNS50204).
 
The Diploma of Accounting helps students build on their accounting knowledge. This gives them the ability to continue their studies to a higher qualification or entry level position in an accounting support or bookkeeping role.
 
Fast-track mode
To fast track the Diploma of Accounting, this course assumes foundation industry knowledge; it is necessary for students to have been working in a financial services related position for a minimum of three years.

This qualification builds on fundamental accounting knowledge to enable students to pursue a career in an accounting support role or continue their studies to a higher level. Students gain knowledge in manual accounting systems, computerised accounting systems using MYOB software, and learn various ways of communicating within an office environment.


To obtain this qualification, students must complete nine units, six core units and three elective units, plus nine pre-requisites (from Certificate IV in Accounting).

Fast-track mode
To fast track the Diploma of Accounting, all students must have been working in industry for a minimum of three years, some units will be assessed by Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
The remaining units will be delivered in blocks of four fortnightly workshops followed by a four week break, in which time students will complete their assessment tasks. Course facilitators will be available by email throughout this time. Workshops are held at Swinburne’s Melbourne CBD campus.

This qualification reflects accounting job roles in financial services and other industries requiring accounting support functions, including accounts payable officer, accounts receivable officer, bookkeeper, and administration officer. Duties such as the following could be performed:
  • Completing Business Activity Statements (BAS) and other office taxes
  • Operational reporting
  • Producing non-complex management reports including compiling budget information
  • Compiling data for job costing reports
  • Supervising the operation of computer-based financial systems
  • Classifying, recording and reporting accounting information
  • Maintaining inventory records
  • Managing a small office
  • Ensuring relevant legal requirements are adhered to

Satisfactory completion of the Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 4: Pathways -60%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.
