Course Description:
This course will provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge to develop a carbon inventory and create a carbon report to workplace standards. The course is based on current greenhouse and energy reporting methodologies.
Aims & Objectives:
The aim of this course is to teach students how to measure carbon emissions and report back to key stakeholders. Students will learn: the scientific and industrial background to carbon accounting;terminology, trends and drivers;international best practices, methodologies and standards;to identify, categorise and calculate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions;to prepare and interpret a carbon/GHG inventory;current carbon and energy related legislation;to evaluate business risks and opportunities in a low carbon future;to identify an organisation’s carbon management options;to develop a carbon report for an organisation;to review carbon reporting procedures.
Course Structure:
Carbon Accounting courses are available in the following formats. Introduction to Carbon AccountingClassroom based learning over two days to make a fast start at an affordable rate. Introduction to Carbon Accounting + Project and AssessmentThis extension to the two day classroom introduction will guide you through the development of a carbon inventory and report. Undertaking two assessment tasks will enable you to gain two nationally accredited units of competency. These two units count towards the Diploma of Carbon Management. (Time commitment: two days face-to-face plus three hours online study over eight weeks.) Accredited Course in Carbon Accounting (Online)Two nationally accredited units of competency with assessment. These two units count towards the Diploma of Carbon Management. (Time commitment: approximately four hours per week online study over 16 weeks.)
Units of Study:
Unit 1: VPAU324 Develop a carbon inventory for the workplace This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and create a greenhouse gas emissions inventory. Participants apply accepted methodologies for accounting for carbon emissions and produce an inventory for an organisation. Identify the context of carbon accounting.Identify carbon accounting methodologies.Apply carbon accounting methodologies.Develop and analyse the organisation’s carbon inventory. Unit 2: VPAU325 Develop a carbon report for the workplaceThis unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and create a carbon report for the workplace. Participants review and contextualise a greenhouse gas emissions inventory and apply standard approaches for reporting on the inventory. Review the organisation’s carbon inventory.Develop a carbon report for the organisation.Review carbon reporting procedures.
Career Opportunities:
This course prepares you for emerging roles in organisations that will be affected by a carbon tax and an emissions trading scheme. Undertaking this course will enable you to future proof your career. It may lead to career opportunities such as employment as an energy analyst, enviromental officer, or carbon analyst.
Professional recognition:
The course is a recognised part of the upcoming Diploma of Carbon Management and counts as two units of the diploma’s total of seven. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will gain credit and recognition towards the diploma.

Entry Requirements:
A basic understanding of MS Excel spreadsheets or equivalent package is essential.
Credit Transfer:
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will gain credit and recognition towards the Diploma of Carbon Management and other recognised courses/qualificiations of which these two units are a part.
Recognition of Prior Learning:
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.To learn more about RPL visit the RPL website.
