This course is designed to provide students with the skills needed to work in the IT industry as programmers, analysts or designers. On completion students can also continue to both the Diploma of Information Technology (Software Development) and the Diploma of Information Technology (Website Development). The combined duration of the certificate and the diploma or dual diploma is two years.
 
Note: the Diploma of Information Technology (Website Development) is not currently available to international students. 


Graduates of this course will possess the ability to perform as a 'junior’ programmer, and demonstrate:
  • the skills necessary for working in a software development team on a small-scale project;
  • an understanding of the process of software development;
  • skills in requirements analysis, systems analysis and design;
  • skills in developing software in Java, VB.NET and PHP;
  • the communication and management skills required to manage small-scale projects successfully.


To attain the Certificate IV in Information Technology (Programming), 21 units must be achieved: 17 core units and four elective units.

Depending on the choice of electives, graduates could work in a number of 'junior' programming roles or support roles including analyst/programmer, applications analyst/engineer/programmer, digital programmer, games designer/programmer, software support engineer.

Satisfactory completion of the Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 4: Pathways -60%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.
