This course provides students with significant exposure to the major operating environment such as Microsoft Server, Novell Netware Server and Linux.

This course is designed to provide students with the skills needed to work in the IT industry as network administrators, support officers and hardware/operating system officers. On completion students can also continue to both the Diploma of Information Technology (Networking) and Diploma of Information Technology (Systems Administration). The combined duration of the certificate and either of these diplomas is two years.
 
Note: the Diploma of Information Technology (Systems Administration) is not available to international students.
 
(International students holding a student visa are required to study full-time and cannot take this course in workplace training mode.)


Graduates of this course will possess the ability to perform as a 'junior' specialist and demonstrate:
  • the skills necessary for working in a networking team on a small-scale network
  • skills in using scripting languages
  • the communication and management skills required to manage small-scale projects successfully
  • knowledge of and experience in administrating a network
  • knowledge of and experience in installing, configuring and fault finding hardware devices
  • skills in maintaining web pages


To attain the Certificate IV in Information Technology (General), 23 units must be completed:
  • eight common core units
  • nine specialist stream core units (three units from each of the Software, Networking and Hardware/Operating Systems Streams)
  • six elective units

Graduates could work in a number of 'junior' support roles in the areas of: network administration and IT help desk support officer.
 
Employment can also be sought in network administration, systems management, help desk and IT support. Alternatively, students are well prepared to continue to diploma studies in Networking and Systems Administration.
 
Note: the Diploma of Information Technology (Systems Administration) is not available to international students.

Satisfactory completion of the Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 4: Pathways -60%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.
