The Certificate IV in Automotive Technology is designed to extend and enhance the technical ability of automotive tradespeople. Students acquire the skills and knowledge needed to practice as an automotive technician. The course is conducted at Swinburne's Wantirna campus automotive workshop, one night per week part-time for local students and three days per week full-time for international students. The workshop is fully equipped with technology currently used in industry. Most learning is achieved through practical demonstration and practice.
 
(Students holding an international student visa are required to study full-time.)


To provide the candidate with the skills and knowledge required to enhance automotive vehicle diagnostic ability.


This course requires completion of ten units of competency, which can be completed sequentially or when time allows.

This course will provide graduates with enhanced employment opportunities in the automotive industry and a pathway to commence the Diploma of Automotive Technical. They will be equipped for roles as an automotive technician, service manager and workshop foreperson.

Satisfactory completion of the Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Upper Intermediate level certificate at the Pathways level (EAP 4: Pathways -60%); OR, obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 5.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 5.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 527 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL Computer-based) minimum score of 196 (with Written Writing score of 4.5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 71 with no band less than 18.
