This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in skilled operations with the need to apply discretion and judgement. Skills gained enable graduates to work in various hospitality settings, such as restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, pubs, cafes and coffee shops. Individuals may have some responsibility for others and provide technical advice and support to a team.

The qualification is suitable for an Australian apprenticeship pathway.

This qualification can be undertaken on campus as an embedded qualification in the Advanced Diploma of Hospitality or as a traineeship in industry (workplace-based training).

The course duration is one year part-time on-campus, or can be undertaken as a traineeship in the workplace with a duration of six to twelve months.

Individuals with this qualification are able to perform tasks such as:
  • preparing and serving drinks at a bar
  • preparing and serving espresso coffee
  • serving food, wine and other beverages at tables
  • providing reception or front desk services
  • providing housekeeping services
  • providing gaming services
Possible job titles include:
  • bar attendant
  • barista
  • waiter
  • wine waiter
  • front desk receptionist
  • housekeeper
  • gaming attendant

Satisfactory completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 10/11 or its equivalent, or mature age.

Students who are undertaking this course as the formal training component of an apprenticeship are also required to have secured an apprenticeship agreement with an employer.

An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain unit requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.
