Course Description:
This apprenticeship course provides students with the skills and abilities appropriate to meet the needs of the various sectors within the nursery industry. Study is undertaken in one of the streams of nursery in which a person is working in. The essential units are designed to develop your generic workplace skills, which are highly valued by employers. These skills include understanding industry and health and safety requirements, working in teams and communication skills.
Aims & Objectives:
This course is based upon industry-identified Horticulture Training Package competencies. It aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to operate successfully at trade level in commercial retail nurseries.
Course Structure:
A total of 16 units of competency must be completed, including one compulsory unit.

Compulsory unit RTE3713A Carry out workplace OHS procedures Additional units WRRCS1B Communicate in the workplace WRRCS3B Interact with customers WRRS4B Build relationships with customers RTC3016A Provide information on plants & their culture RTC3404A Control plant pests, diseases & disorders RTF3020A Install and maintain interior plant displays WRRM3B Merchandise presentation RTF3503A Sample soils & analyse results RTC2016 Recognise plants RTF3012A Implement a plant nutrition programme RTF3036A Plan & establish plant displays RTF3026A Receive & dispatch plants & other nursery products RTF3021A Maintain nursery plants RTC3704A Prepare & apply chemicals RTE3819A Process customer complaints Note: some electives from other industry streams (e.g. Landscape, Nursery and Flowergrowing) may be substituted if they are more appropriate for a particular enterprise. The department will determine in any year which electives will be offered, based on available resources and minimum class sizes.
Career Opportunities:
Employment as a qualified nursery person and potential for further study.
Professional recognition:
This is a national qualification and is formally recognised by the Nursery Industries Association of Australia and its affiliates.
Entry Requirements:
Applicants must be 15 years or over, have appropriate numeracy and literacy skills and have secured full-time or part-time employment in the nursery industry as an apprentice.
Credit Transfer:
Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Pathways (articulation):
An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain unit requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning:
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.
