Course Description:
This traineeship provides students with the skills and abilities appropriate to meet the needs of the floriculture industry. The essential units are designed to develop students’ generic workplace skills, which are so highly valued by employers. These include understanding industry and health and safety requirements, working in teams, and communication skills.
Aims & Objectives:
This course is based upon industry-identified Horticulture Training Package competencies. It aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to operate successfully at trade level in the flowergrowing industry.
Course Structure:
A total of 16 units of competency must be completed, including one compulsory unit.

Compulsory unit RTE3713A Carry out workplace OHS procedures Additional units RTC3404A Control plant pests, diseases and disorders RTC3701A Respond to emergencies RTC3704A Prepare and apply chemicals RTE3003A Coordinate horticultural crop harvesting RTE3013A Implement a postharvest program RTE3030A Harvest horticultural crops mechanically RTE3307A Coordinate machinery and equipment maintenance and repair RTF3011A Implement a plant establishment program RTF3012A Implement a plant nutrition program RTC3401A Control weeds RTC3705A Transport, handle and store chemicals RTE3611A Operate pressurised irrigation systems RTE3904A Keep records for a primary production business RTF3033A Implement a maintenance program for hydroponic systems RTC2309A Design and prepare growing media Note: some electives from other industry streams (i.e. Landscape, Nursery, and Flowergrowing) may be substituted if they are more appropriate for a particular enterprise. The department will determine in any year which electives will be offered, based on available resources and minimum class sizes.
Career Opportunities:
Employment as a qualified flowergrower or further study.
Professional recognition:
This is a national qualification which is formally recognised throughout Australia.
Entry Requirements:
Applicants must be 15 years or over and have appropriate numeracy and literacy skills. Applicants must have secured full or part-time employment as a flowergrowing trainee.
Credit Transfer:
Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Pathways (articulation):
An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain unit requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning:
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.
