Certificate II in Horticulture

The Certificate II in Horticulture provides students with the skills and abilities appropriate to meet the needs of the various sectors within the horticultural industry. The essential units are designed to develop the students’ generic workplace skills which are highly valued by employers. These include understanding industry and health and safety requirements, working in teams, and communication skills.
This course is delivered for School Based Apprentices (2 year duration), Vet in VCE (2 year duration), Full-time students (6 months duration), or in part as a Vocational Introductory Program (1 or 2 term duration depending on units offered).

The course aims to develop appropriate knowledge and skills which can enable a student to perform workplace tasks to specified standards and conditions.

A total of 17 units of competency must be completed, including four compulsory units.

The full-time course would suit people wishing to be employed in the general horticultural industry; however, electives from other industry streams may be substituted if they are more appropriate for a student or enterprise. These include electives from the following streams:
  • landscape
  • parks and gardens
  • viticulture
  • nursery
  • production (fruit, berry and vegetable growing)
  • flowergrowing.
The school-based apprenticeship (SBA) and VET in VCE courses are run on days which align with school release days for these courses. The units of competence studied in this stream will vary from the units listed above. The Vocational Introductory Program units of competence align with those studied in Vet in VCE and SBA course. Swinburne will determine in any year which electives will be offered, based on available resources and minimum class sizes.

This is a national qualification which is formally recognised throughout Australia.

Applicants must be 15 years or over and have appropriate numeracy and literacy skills. Applicants must have secured full or part-time employment as a trainee in the horticulture industry.

Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain unit requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.
