The Bachelor of Business Administration course exposes students to key fundamental concepts and core business principles. Students will also develop practical knowledge and skills. Graduates will have a broad and coherent body of knowledge with depth in the underlying principles and concepts of business administration. There is an industry focus and students will have the opportunity to undertake industry engagement options.

The Bachelor of Business Administration offers students a unique combination of practical, vocationally-oriented experience as well as theoretical and conceptual understanding. The program includes a choice of three specialisations of Business Administration, Applied Management and Retail Management in the first year.

On completion of the first year of the degree, students will be eligible to exit and graduate with a diploma should they choose not to complete the three-year bachelor degree program.
 

In the second and third year, students choose between two streams; either from the Faculty of Business and Enterprise / School of Business or the Faculty of Higher Education Lilydale.

 

On completion of the second year of the degree, students may be eligible to exit and graduate with an associate degree should they choose not to complete the three-year bachelor degree program.


(Students holding an international student visa are required to study full-time and cannot take the part-time study mode.)


The Bachelor of Business Administration aims to equip students with practical knowledge and skills. This degree introduces students to a range of core business disciplines, including marketing, accounting, human resources management, business information systems and organisational behaviour, as well as providing opportunities for students to develop and practice professional skills essential in the workplace.
 
Students will be armed with skills which will enable them to think critically, research and analyse information and apply it in business contexts. This degree affords students opportunities to develop and practise technical and conceptual skills.


The Bachelor of Business Administration forms a nested program. A nested program is a sequence of courses which is followed to obtain the highest available award and which has multiple entry and exit points. This structure allows students the flexibility to qualify for the ultimate award or exit at an earlier stage. The Bachelor of Business Administration incorporates the Associate Degree of Business Administration ( BBA050) /Associate Degree of Applied Management ( BBA060) and Diploma of Business Administration / Diploma of Applied Management / Diploma of Retail Management.

To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Business Administration, students must complete 24 units of study (300 credit points), comprising:

  • Eight specialisation units (100 credit points) from one of the following options: Business Administration, Retail Management or Management
  • Eight General Business units (100 credit points)
  • Eight Business units consisting of a combination of common units and electives (100 credit points), and
  • HBG0004 Careers in the Curriculum (0 credit points)

Students must complete a total of 24 units of study, with eight specialisation units in Year 1 and 16 units in Years 2 and 3.


Year 1
Students complete eight units from one of the three specialisation options below.
Students may exit with the Diploma of Business Administration or continue the Bachelor of Business Administration.

Option 2 - Retail Management specialisation (Not available in 2012)
Students may exit with the Diploma of Retail Management or continue in the Bachelor of Business Administration.

Option 3 - Management specialisation (Hawthorn)

Students may exit with the Diploma of Applied Management or continue in the Bachelor of Business Administration.


Year 2 and Year 3

Students complete 16 units (in addition to one of the specialisations above) from one of the two stream options.

Delivered by the Faculty of Business and Enterprise / School of Business.
Students who completed the Business Administration specialisation must complete units HBM110N and HBH225N.

Students who completed the Retail Management specialisation must complete HBH226N and HIT1601.

Students who completed the Applied Management specialisation must complete HBM240, HBH225N and HBM271N.


Upon successful completion of Year 2, students may exit with one of the associate degrees below based on their specialisation choice completed in the first stage/year or continue with the Bachelor of Business Administration:
 
Associate Degree of Business Administration (BBA050) – students who completed the Business Administration or Retail Management specialisation
Associate Degree of Applied Management (BBA060) – students who completed the Management specialisation
 

Year 3
Delivered by the Faculty of Business and Enterprise / School of Business.
HBH324N Managing Workplace Relations
Any four elective units of choice (50 credit points total) with two units being at stage 2 and one unit being at stage 3.


Award Bachelor of Business Administration.

Year 2
Delivered by Faculty of Higher Education Lilydale.

Year 3
Delivered by Faculty of Higher Education Lilydale.
LTE307 Strategic Management And any two elective units of choice (25 credit points total) at Stage 2 or Stage 3 level.

Honours:

An honours degree at Swinburne provides an opportunity for students with a demonstrated academic ability to pursue their undergraduate studies to an advanced level - to deepen their intellectual understanding in their major area of study and to develop their research skills. Honours students work independently but in close consultation with a supervisor on a substantial project of their choice. Students are required to collect and analyse data and produce a substantial written thesis (15,000 to 20,000 words) on their findings. This program is designed to meet the needs of small and medium enterprises as well as large corporations. It will give a professional qualification to those engaged in the administration and management of businesses and other organisations, including public, private and not-for-profit organisations.

Students who select the Retail Management specialisation in their first year will have enhanced employment opportunities in management and executive positions in retail organisations, including suppliers and franchise operations. Students who select the Business Administration stream, will be equipped for employment as an executive assistant, administrative supervisor/officer and in senior administrative positions. Whilst those who select Applied Management, will be equipped for employment in middle management in a range of private and public organisations.

Swinburne College English for Academic Purposes Advanced level certificate at the undergraduate level (EAP 5: UG-65% ); OR, Obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band of 6.0 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0; OR, a TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 550 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Computer-based) minimum score of 213 (with Written Writing score of 5); OR, a TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 80 with no band less than 20.
