Hawthorn Full-time, Part-time (day) Undergraduate Three years full-time (or equivalent part-time).

The aim of this course is to prepare students for careers in the aviation industry as professional pilots. Please note that to achieve a Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL), students must undertake practical flying training in addition to this program which will incur flight training fees in addition to the course fees.

Commercial and Air Transport licence theory is augmented with educational topics designed to provide an optimum balance between the range of areas required by today’s professional pilots. Aviation human factors training, aviation management and aviation technology topics are included to attain this objective.
 
The Bachelor of Aviation is also offered as a double degree with Commerce, Bachelor of Aviation/Bachelor of Commerce.

Students complete 300 credit points. The program must meet the requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for the provision of Commercial Pilot licence theory and practical training.

Students choose units of study from the following discipline groups:
  • Core Aviation/Aviation Human Factors/Air Transportation Management and Aviation Technology Studies - 200 credit points
  • Core Project Studies - 25 credit points
  • Elective Aviation/Aviation Human Factors/Air Transportation Management and Aviation Technology Studies - 37.5 credit points
  • A further 37.5 credit points from: Aviation and Aviation Technology Studies; Elective Plus Sequence; or Elective studies as approved by the Program Panel
Practical Flying Training
The practical flying training to CPL (A) standard is not compulsory but highly recommended.. Students who do not undertake the practical training as recommended may not meet the CASA 150 hour approved syllabus requirements and therefore may require additional flight hours in the future to obtain their CPL(A). Students who do not wish to undertake or complete the practical flying training are highly recommended to undertake the Bachelor of Aviation (Management) or Bachelor of Aviation (Management)/Bachelor of Commerce.

Careers in the Curriculum (CIC)
In addition to the above, students must complete a compulsory unit of study HES0000 Careers in the Curriculum  to be awarded the degree. Careers in the Curriculum (CIC) is an innovative unit designed to assist Swinburne students to enhance their employability and career prospects. It is usually undertaken in the second year of your course and is compulsory for all undergraduate students who commence their course from 2007 onwards. Students studying CIC will not incur a HECS or fee debt for the unit as the cost will be met by the university as part of an initiative to enhance students' career skills.

Electives Plus
Electives Plus provide Swinburne degree students with options to broaden their career skills and strengthen their employability by selecting from units of study outside their degree discipline. Students can choose to study an Electives Plus sequences of three units instead of three individual elective units.
 
Electives Plus sequences are available in all Swinburne degree programs subject to timetabling constraints, with the exception of double degree programs, specialist double major degrees, and where entry has been approved with advanced standing.
 
Final Year Experience - Major Projects
As part of the Swinburne Model for Professional Learning, all undergraduates undertake 25 credit points of professionally focused final year major projects within their programs of study. Entry with advanced standing may require alternate study sequences to be undertaken.

Recommended Study Sequence
 
 
 
 
Students are recommended to follow the above sequence, however you can choose to vary your program by taking alternative electives according to the program structure rules.

Note:
  • # Elective units of study.
  • The faculty will timetable combinations of units according to the recommended sequence.
  • * These units of study will be either fully or partly delivered by Oxford Aviation Academy (OAA), Moorabbin Airport.
  • All seven CASA CPL theory examination credits are required for the student to sit CASA ATPL theory exams.
  • Students should undertake Careers in the Curriculum in their fourth academic semester. Students may undertake it after this point, however, priority will be given to students selecting it as scheduled.
  • The faculty will enrol students in HES3901 upon OAA confirmation that CPL(A) has been achieved. No Swinburne fees are incurred.

Swinburne offers International Exchange Programs as well as other Swinburne Abroad Programs to help internationalise your degree. International Exchange is an academic program allowing you to study at a Swinburne Partner Institution for one or two semesters during your degree. Swinburne's Partner Institutions offer many relevant subjects as well as a secure base to explore a different culture. The Bachelor of Aviation course is designed to take students beyond the requirements for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) theory examination and Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL(A)) practical test.

Successful completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, such as an interstate or international Year 12 qualification.
2009 VCE Prerequisites: Units 3 & 4 - a study score of at least 20 in English (any) and Mathematical Methods (either).
 
Selection mode: ENTER, interview and satisfaction of the statutory medical requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
Middle-band: re-ranking based on study scores in specialist mathematics, physics and psychology.

All applicants must participate in a pre-selection program and should register their interest by submitting the Swinburne Application for Interview Form by 30 September. All applicants will be required to attend an interview; details will be sent  in the mail by mid November. These applicants must attend in early December.

Before commencing commercial licence flying training, students will be required to obtain a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Class 1 Medical Certificate and are strongly advised to take an evaluation flight to determine if they have the coordination skills required.
 
Partially completed tertiary qualifications: preference given to applicants with credit grade average of at least 65% (VTAC calculated GPA of 5) or above with no fails.

Advanced Diploma holders: preference given to applicants who have achieved a credit grade average of at least 65% with no fails in the final year.

Subject to available places, diploma holders may be considered for selection, with preference given to students who have achieved an average distinction level of 75% or above in the last two semesters of the diploma with no fails in the final year.

Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted ‘credit’ and/or entry into the course with ‘advanced standing’. An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain subject requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Students achieving a credit average in the bridging stream of the Advanced Diploma of Technology (Aviation) program, who have undertaken the bridging stream, will have the opportunity to apply for transfer into the degree course with 125 credit points advanced standing.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training. Swinburne offers domestic undergraduate students Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or holders of an Australian permanent resident visa are classified as domestic students. All other students are considered international students.

HELP
The Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) is a suite of income-contingent loans for Australian citizens and holders of Australian permanent humanitarian visas. HELP consists of:
  • HECS-HELP (previously HECS) – is available to eligible Commonwealth-supported students. It provides students with a loan to cover their student contribution amount. Students are eligible for a 20% discount if they choose to pay all, or at least $500, of their student contribution up front.
  • FEE-HELP (previously PELS) – is available to eligible fee-paying undergraduate and postgraduate students. It provides students with a loan to cover their tuition fees (lifetime maximum $83,313 from 1 January 2009). The FEE-HELP limit is indexed on 1 January each year.
  • OS-HELP – is available to eligible Commonwealth-supported students, who wish to study overseas, with a loan to cover expenses such as accommodation and travel.

Note: New Zealand citizens and holders of other Australian permanent resident visas do not have access to HELP loans. These students must pay their student contributions or tuition fees up front without a discount.

Flying Training Fees
 
 
Domestic students may undertake flying training through enrolment in the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) or by private arrangement with our flying training provider, Oxford Aviation Academy (Australia). International students undertaking flying training will do so by private arrangement with Oxford Aviation Academy (Australia).

In addition to fees payable for the Bachelor degree, students undertaking flying training will pay:
- Flying training fees; and,
- Additional costs associated with equipment, flight crew licence issue and testing.
