Course Description:
The Bachelor of Aviation (Honours) program is designed to provide preparation for postgraduate study with a focus on developing research attributes, to enable graduates to undertake research. The Bachelor of Aviation (Honours) degree is taken as an additional year following the three-year Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation (Management) degree, or four-year Bachelor of Aviation/Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Aviation (Management)/Bachelor of Commerce double degrees.
Aims & Objectives:
The honours year aims to: Provide high achieving students with an opportunity to deepen their intellectual understanding of aviationEnhance the research literacy of the aviation workforceTo provide students with the research and analytical skills associated with high quality researchTo develop students' communication skills so that they can present their ideas clearly by verbal, written and graphic meansTo provide students with experience in preparing information for publication in peer-reviewed journalsProvide a foundation for further studies to masters or PhD level
Course Structure:
The Bachelor of Aviation (Honours) program operates under a student workload model based on 100 credit points for a full-time academic year. One credit point is deemed to be equivalent to one hour of student work per week over a semester, whether in contact with staff or in private study. Total student contact hours per unit, including lectures, classes, tutorials and computer laboratory sessions, will normally be approximately 48 hours per week during the academic semesters (Winter and Summer Term have the same number of contact hours but compressed in time). The program will consist of 100 credit points, of which 37.5 credit points (3 units) are coursework units and the remaining 62.5 credit points are a supervised individual research project. The duration of this program is two semesters full-time.
Units of Study:
All units of study are 12.5 points unless noted otherwiseStudents complete 100 credit points, being; Semester 1 HMS770 Statistical Practice 1 (or equivalent)HIT4010 Research Methods (or equivalent)HES5900 Aviation Research Topics HES5901 Aviation Honours Projects (Part 1) Semester 2 HES5902 Aviation Honours Projects (Part 2) (50 credit points) Equivalent coursework statistics and research method units across other faculties may be taken subject to the approval and recommendation of the Aviation Honours Program Coordinator.
Education Abroad:
Swinburne offers International Exchange Programs as well as other Education Abroad Programs to help internationalise your degree. International Exchange is an academic program allowing you to study at a Swinburne Partner Institution for one or two semesters during your degree. Swinburne's Partner Institutions offer many relevant subjects as well as a secure base to explore a different culture. Your studies whilst on exchange can be credited towards your Swinburne degree, provided they are relevant and approved by Swinburne. For further information visit the Education Abroad website.

The Bachelor of Aviation (Honours) will seek to produce graduates who will have well-developed attributes which will equip them for their early career and life. Entry Requirements:
Acceptance into the honours program will require completion of a degree with an aviation or aviation management major, from a recognised tertiary institution. A credit average or above in Stage 3 units will be required.
Credit Transfer:
No credit transfer will be granted in this program. Students who have previously successfully completed a coursework unit in this program (or equivalent), such as HMS770, maybe granted a preclusion for that unit. The precluded unit will then be replaced with another relevant unit.
