The Associate Degree of Health and Community Care provides individuals with the skills and knowledge within the health environment focusing on community health, policy, law and various other aspects of coordination and management.

The Associate Degree of Health and Community Care has been developed to equip individuals with knowledge, understanding and skills for success in employment in the health and/or community care sector at a supervisory or management level.
 
This program allows graduates to work in specialist skilled areas within their industry sector by working with members to influence and guide the future of their community, and to develop techniques and frameworks to facilitate this process. A focus on working independently, in order to achieve results in line with the organisation's goals and strategic direction, are skills and knowledge that are developed and explored throughout this program.
 
(Students holding an international student visa are required to study full-time.)

  • Critically analyse, synthesise and summarise information from a range of health and community care organisations in order to draw conclusions
  • Read and use appropriate literature with a full and critical understanding required to conduct research in a health and community care context
  • Think independently and solve problems relating to the health and community care of a diverse range of clients
  • Give a clear and accurate account of a subject, assemble arguments in a mature way and engage in debate and dialogue both with specialists and non-specialists in a health and community care context

The Associate Degree of Health and Community Care consists of 16 units of study, comprising eight specialist units and eight health and community care units, totalling 200 credit points.
 
At the conclusion of Year 1, students may be eligible to exit with a VET diploma and/or substantial recognition towards a diploma.
 
At the conclusion of Year 2, students may be eligible to exit with a VET advanced diploma and/or substantial recognition towards an advanced diploma.

Swinburne offers International Exchange Programs as well as other Education Abroad Programs to help students internationalise their degree. International Exchange is an academic program allowing students to study at a Swinburne Partner Institution for one or two semesters during their degree. Swinburne's Partner Institutions offer many relevant subjects as well as a secure base to explore a different culture. Studies done on exchange can be credited towards the Swinburne degree, provided they are relevant and approved by Swinburne.

Standard entry requirements for the associate degree are:
  • Successfully completed an Australian Year 12, or
  • Successfully completed the final year of secondary study in the student's home country, or
  • Have sufficient relevant work experience and knowledge in this field of study to indicate likely success at this level of qualification
Students who have completed the relevant diploma may enter at second year but will need to successfully complete a Course in Tertiary Transition Skills for a successful pathway for higher education study.
 
Students may receive credit transfers for subjects studied at the appropriate level at other universities or institutions.

Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program is in place at Swinburne. Upon satisfactory completion of the associate degree, students will be eligible for a guaranteed entry and direct pathway into a bachelor cegree program with credit granted for studies completed under the associate degree. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.
