Associate Degree of Applied Information and Communication Technology

The Associate Degree of Applied Information and Communication Technologies comprises a general course of study in information and communication technology (ICT) offered over two years at Swinburne’s Wantirna and Hawthorn campuses.

The Associate Degree of Applied Information and Communication Technology is a two year program of ICT studies with a focus on software and web development. The course provides both employment or further study outcomes. The first three semesters of the program are offered at the Wantirna campus, with the final semester at the Hawthorn campus.The program comprises studies in programming, databases, networking and project management with a particular focus on web and software development.
 
On successful completion of the first year of the Associate Degree of Applied Information and Communication Technology, students will be eligible to apply for credit transfer or to undertake an RPL assessment to gain all or part credit towards an appropriate VET Diploma.
 
Students who complete the Associate Degree of Applied Information and Communication Technology are eligible for a guaranteed place in the final year of the Bachelor of Applied Information and Communication Technology.

At completion of this associate degree, graduates will be expected to:
  • Select and apply methods and technologies to design, program and test software and web applications
  • Use contemporary software development process models in the development of software solutions
  • Apply principles of user-centred design to contribute to the development of usable interfaces
  • Select and use appropriate computer languages to solve software-related problems in a variety of problem domain
  • Use communication and management skills required to manage small-scale projects successfully
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the social, legal and ethical issues confronting the ICT professional

To qualify for the award of Associate Degree of Applied Information and Communication Technology, students must complete the prescribed 16 units (200 credit points).  There are no electives or options in this program.

There are a large number of job roles available for those with applied ICT qualifications and experience in web and software development.  Roles include: application developer, quality assurance analyst, project manager, multimedia developer, mobile application developer, systems architect, business requirements analyst, technical writer, application integration specialist and user interface analyst.

Graduates of the Associate Degree of Applied Information and Communication Technology will have broad theoretical and technical knowledge of computing with some specialised skills and knowledge in software and web development.

Graduates will have the ability to:
  • Identify, analyse, and evaluate information from a range of sources to meet business, client and organisational needs, specialising in software and web development solutions
  • Explore, prototype and develop solutions using a range of methodologies and techniques to realise client and organisation intentions
  • Think creatively and independently and solve problems relating to the client briefs with other developers, designers and engineers
Graduates will be able to demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills by:
  • Developing initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision in a range of ICT industry contexts
  • Adapting and developing knowledge and skills in future contexts
  • Working effectively as an individual or with others within broad parameters
  • Understanding the role of an ICT professional in a rapidly changing world

Successful completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, such as an interstate or international Year 12 qualification.
 
VCE Prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 20 in English (any).
 
Selection mode: ATAR and two-stage process with a middle-band of approximately 20%.  
 
Middle-band: Re-ranking based on information technology (any).
 
Swinburne's Regional Bonus Scheme applies to this program.

Students may receive a maximum of 100 credit points of advanced standing for relevant studies completed at other universities or institutions.
 
Students who complete the associate degree will be guaranteed a place in the final year of the Bachelor of Applied Information and Communication Technology with 200 credit points of credit.

Students who complete the first year of the associate degree with at least a credit average (65%) grade point average (GPA) can apply for entry to the second year of the Bachelor of Applied Information and Communication Technology with 100 credit points of credit.
