Go to top

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in wide-ranging, highly specialised technical tourism skills covering operations, sales, marketing, product development, business planning, and human resource and financial management. These strategic management skills are underpinned by a range of operational competencies, chosen as electives.

Work would mostly be undertaken in an office environment where the planning of tourism products and services takes place, in the field where tourism products are delivered, or a combination of both. Employment opportunities within the tourism field include any destination, local or regional area, tourist precinct, site, attraction or onboard form of transportation.

The qualification reflects the role of individuals who analyse, design and execute judgements using wide-ranging technical, creative, conceptual or managerial competencies. Their knowledge base may be specialised or broad. These individuals are often accountable for group outcomes.

The first year of this course covers studies in sustainable tour guiding, leadership skills, and hospitality skills and knowledge.

In the second year of the course, students focus on tourism operations management. Students undertake the development of a major tourism/guiding project and implement the project as a field activity that may comprise live tours in the Yarra Valley Ranges and interstate destinations.

For domestic students, practical work placement will be encouraged to further develop their skills to industry standards and provide employment opportunities. Please note that this option is not available to international students who hold a student visa.
