This course will provide you with a broad understanding of the hospitality industry, with particular emphasis on the roles of managers and supervisors. You will gain practical experience in food and beverage service, basic cookery and event/conference management. Industry relevance is provided with guest speakers and visits to top hospitality establishments.

This dual qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent as a senior manager in any hospitality functional area. This individual would analyse, design and execute judgements using wide-ranging technical, creative, conceptual or managerial competencies. Work would be undertaken in various hospitality settings, such as restaurants, hotels, catering operations, motels, clubs, pubs, cafes and coffee shops.
 
In addition to the Advanced Diploma of Hospitality, students will undertake studies in event/conference management, specifically in related hospitality industries that have event/function coordination and management to achieve a dual qualification to include the Diploma of Events.

During the first year of this course students will gain practical skills and knowledge of food and beverage/hospitality service (front of house). On completion of the first year students may exit with a Certificate IV in Hospitality to take up employment opportunities with a guaranteed entry to further part-time studies in Advanced Diploma of Hospitality.
 
The second year of the course incorporates transferable skills in business management, such as financial management and business planning and operations. A strong focus on experiential learning is applied through participation in major events, including paid employment. Students also undertake a practical work placement in preparation for employment.

Employment in hospitality operations at a supervisory/management level or further study at degree level.
Individuals with this qualification are able to work in a range of organisations where hospitality or event management takes place, and such organisations are diverse in nature. Examples include professional conference organisers, hotels, exhibition and event management companies, sporting associations, community organisations, hospitality and cultural venues.
Individuals with this qualification are able to perform roles such as:
  • senior manager in a large hospitality enterprise
  • owner or manager of a hospitality enterprise
Possible job titles include:
  • food and beverage manager
  • area manager or operations manager
  • rooms division manager
  • executive housekeeper
  • secretary or manager
  • executive chef
  • cafe owner or manager
  • motel owner or manager
  • event coordinator
  • venue coordinator
  • conference coordinator

Satisfactory completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, or mature age.
 
Applicants who have completed VET in schools will receive advanced standing.

Applicants who have successfully completed VETiS Hospitality studies receive credit transfers and can complete a Diploma of Hospitality Management (Fast Track) in one year of full-time study.
 
Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
