Aims & Objectives:

This unit introduces writers to the relationship between the concept, the collection of data and the publication of a researched piece of writing. This unit will provide students with insights and skills in:

  • Establishing the research question
  • Planning the research journey
  • Research methodologies
  • Data direction, collection and interpretation
  • Writing up: the selection of materials
  • Content tone, style, register
  • Developing strategies for support of prior writing in their area of research and the question of making their own: collaboration or copying?
  • Layout: abstract, introduction, method, results, discussion, references, appendices; proof reading and re-drafting
  • Presentation to publisher
  • Creative research methodologies

Teaching Methods:

Virtual lectures, virtual tutorials, electronic media, reading and practical exercises and e- tutors, e-mentors and e-peer groups

Assessment:

Research Plan 15%, Research Journey 15%, Publication Piece 40%, Participation in weekly Discussion Threads 30%
