Course Description:
The Graduate Certificate of Entrepreneurship and Innovation provides the basic entry-level award for people seeking careers and qualifications in the management of innovation, or it may serve to broaden the skills of managers qualified in other tertiary disciplines.
Aims & Objectives:
The primary aims of the program are: to emphasise the management and development of new opportunities rather than the administration of established practices to develop a concentration on the planning and control of rapid business growth to devote constant attention to integrating knowledge through interdisciplinary approaches, rather than separating knowledge into functional specialties to establish a commitment to the notion of 'theory for practice’s sake' – applying leading-edge theory to create practical solutions for complex real-world problems It has been shown that graduates of our integrated program are capable of starting, developing and managing new business opportunities to achieve company growth.
Course Structure:
Each unit of study is taught in the traditional mode of one (three-hour) night class per week over a 12-week semester or in 'block mode' (usually six full days over a 12-week period). Students are expected to spend a minimum of the equivalent class contact hours per week in private study and/or team project work. The graduate certificate can also be offered as an in-house training program for companies or other organisations.
Units of Study:
Stage 1 - Graduate Certificate HEI611 New Venture Leadership HEI691 Opportunity Evaluation HEI621 New Venture Financial Management HEI631 New Venture Marketing
Career Opportunities:
Successfully start and/or develop new enterprises and enhance career development within organisations.
Entry Requirements:
An appropriate degree or diploma from a recognised tertiary institution (or approved equivalent) with four years full-time work experience in new business creation. A limited number of places are reserved for applicants who do not hold an appropriate qualification but who have significant relevant work experience (normally five years or more) and a level of responsibility in industry or business. In some cases, additional preliminary study may be required. Continuation in the program is determined by academic results. All graduate entry candidates must have at least four years of approved full-time work experience after completing a bachelor degree. This program is not appropriate for applicants without work experience.
Credit Transfer:
The AGSE is committed to the principles of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Our philosophy of Learning Through Experience recognises that learning takes place through a variety of means including formal studies at universities, other accredited institutions and private providers; employer-based training and development; and relevant experience gained within the workforce. Undergraduate units are ineligible as a basis for unit exemptions, however, students with a major sequence of study in a relevant discipline will have the option of completing an additional elective as a substitution. Applications for RPL should accompany the enrolment application.
Course Fees:
In 2009, tuition fees for this program are based on $2450 per 12.5 credit point unit of study. In the event that a unit of study is derived from another program, the applicable fee will be that of the other program. All fees are reviewed each year and may increase without notice. The Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) is a suite of income-contingent loans for Australian citizens and holders of Australian permanent humanitarian visas. FEE-HELP (previously PELS) is available to eligible fee-paying undergraduate and postgraduate students. It provides students with a loan to cover their tuition fees (lifetime maximum $83,313 from 1 January 2009). The FEE-HELP limit is indexed on 1 January each year. Note: New Zealand citizens and holders of other Australian permanent resident visas do not have access to HELP loans. These students must pay their student contributions or tuition fees up front without a discount.
