The faculty offers the degree of Doctor of Philosophy on a full-time or part-time basis*. A candidate may be required to undertake preliminary coursework as part of the candidature. The policy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy sets out the regulations governing this qualification. Scholarships
Research Training Scheme
Higher degree students will normally receive a fee exemption place under the Research Training Scheme.

Australian Postgraduate Award
The Australian Research Council (ARC) offers 900 Australian Postgraduate Awards (APAs) per year to postgraduate researchers of exceptional promise. Equivalent Swinburne-funded scholarships are also available: these are known as Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Awards.

* Please note that due to government regulatory requirements, international students holding student visas must enrol in the full-time program.

Students generally undertake their formal and supervised research training over a period of three and half years full-time, up to five years full-time; or four years part-time, up to eight years part-time. Research can be undertaken at Swinburne, or an approved external organisation. A major thesis is the sole form of assessment for this award. Candidates carry out a program of research, investigation or development involving the submission of a substantial major thesis embodying the results of that program and presented as a coherent whole work. Applicants should have a 1st class or upper 2nd class honours degree or equivalent in a discipline appropriate to the proposed area of study. The level of academic achievement in prior studies should be of a very high standard. Other relevant activities, including work experience, will be taken into account in assessing applications.

A number of research scholarships are available at Swinburne.

Swinburne Chancellor’s Research Scholarship (CRS)
  • CRS are funded by Swinburne University of Technology and are the University’s premier research scholarships. CRS are open to all applicants - international and Australian and New Zealand citizens.
  • CRS cover tuition fees and provide an annual stipend of $25,000, a research Establishment Grant of up to $3000, and up to $5000 for an overseas placement, for up to six months, in a collaborating laboratory or organisation nominated by Swinburne.
  • CRS are only available only for full-time PhD study within one of Swinburne’s areas of research concentration.
Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Award (SUPRA)
  • SUPRA are funded by Swinburne University of Technology.
  • SUPRA are open to all applicants – international students and Australian and New Zealand citizens.
  • SUPRA cover tuition fees plus an annual stipend and are available for either Doctoral or Masters level research.

Intending applicants should approach the had of the relevant discipline or the Faculty Research Coordinator to identify staff who may be appropriate and available to supervise the proposed project. Information about staff research expertise is available on the Faculty website http://www.swin.edu.au/lss.
An application can proceed only if a staff member with suitable expertise is available and willing to supervise the project.

Applications, signed by the applicant, the coordinating supervisor and second supervisor are submitted to the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (secretariat in AS319). Applications accepted by this committee are then forwarded to the Higher Degrees Committee for approval.

Applicants should note that one to two months should be allowed for a successful application to be evaluated.
