Advanced Diploma of Accounting

The Advanced Diploma in Accounting aims to provide students with the opportunity to obtain knowledge and skills relating to manual and computerised bookkeeping, financial reporting, costing, budgeting, taxation, financial accounting, auditing and financial management. On completion of the taxation modules and two years relevant experience students may be eligible register as tax agents.

The Advanced Diploma of Accounting incorporates the Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical) and the Diploma of Accounting. Students must complete all prerequisite competencies from each level before commencing the advanced diploma.

To attain a Advanced Diploma of Accounting, 17 units must be achieved:
  • four industry core units,
  • five prerequisite units common to the Diploma of Accounting
  • one sectoral core unit, plus
  • seven elective units
Four industry core units:
FNSICGEN301B Communicate in the workplace
FNSICGEN302B Use technology in the workplace
FNSICGEN304B Apply health and safety practices in the workplace
FNSICIND401B Apply principles of professional practice to work in the financial services industry

Five prerequisite units:
Competency in the following core sectoral units from the Diploma of Accounting must be demonstrated prior to awarding of this qualification:
FNSACCT502B Prepare income tax returns
FNSACCT503B Manage budgets and forecasts
FNSACCT504B Prepare financial reports for a reporting entity
FNSACCT506B Implement and maintain internal control procedures
FNSACCT507B Provide management accounting information

Sectoral core units:
Students must achieve the following sectoral core unit:
FNSACCT604B Monitor corporate governance activities

Elective units:
Students must achieve at least seven approved elective units. Elective units currently available for study as part of this course include:
FNSACCT601B Prepare complex tax returns and lodgements
FNSACCT602B Audit and report on financial systems and records
FNSACCT603B Implement tax plans and evaluate tax compliance
FNSACCT607B Evaluate business performance
FNSACCT613B Prepare and analyse management accounting information
FNSACCT614B Prepare complex corporate financial reports
FNSFMKT501B Analyse financial markets and information
FNSICORG516B Prepare financial reports to meet statutory requirements
FNSICORG517B Prepare financial forecasts and projections
 
Elective units must be chosen as follows:
  • all seven elective units may be selected from the list of units suitable at advanced diploma level
  • of the seven elective units, at least four units must be chosen from the units specified by the TAFE School of Business
  • of the seven elective units, up to three units may be selected from the list of units suitable at diploma level or above from this Training Package or other endorsed Training Packages
  • the choice of electives should be appropriate to the level and integrity of the qualification and to the workplace outcomes it is designed to meet

The course provides up-to-date training for a variety of accounting positions such as assistant accountant in medium to large organisations.

On completion of the advanced diploma, graduates are eligible for membership of the National Institute of Accountants (NIA).

Successful completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, or mature age.

Applicants with appropriate prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of the course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain subject requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.

The advanced diploma forms the last of four stages of the Advanced Diploma of Accounting qualification. Applications to study the advanced diploma full-time must be made through VTAC.
