This course prepares students for careers in graphic design by providing a foundation program in design theory and practice. This stream emphasises preparatory training in graphic design, enabling students to apply for further vocation design studies in TAFE or degree courses.

This course aims to provide an overview of the historical and contextual basis for design as well as providing an introduction to the practical skills and the aesthetic engagement required for a designer.

Satisfactory completion of an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, or mature age. It is also expected that applicants will have competencies in art and design, numeracy and literacy that will enable them to achieve the course objectives. Applicants for the program at Prahran campus will be expected to have more advanced competencies to secure admission into the course. All applicants will be required to present a folio of their art work at interview.

Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted 'credit' and/or entry to the course with 'advanced standing'. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. An advanced credit transfer system, known as the Pathways program, is in place at Swinburne. Through Pathways, students with one or more of a wide range of post-secondary qualifications (both local and international) can gain entry into a course with advanced standing. Certain subject requirements must be met and an acceptable standard of results achieved in order to gain admission and for maximum credit to be granted. Prahran Campus
Completion of Certificate IV in Design & Enhancement with distinctions of 75% or above in 50% of units and no fails will ensure direct entry into year 2 of the Bachelor of Design (Communication Design), with possible entry into Bachelor of Design (Interior Design), Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) or Bachelor of Design (Multimedia Design)
 
Wantirna Campus
Completion of Certificate IV in Design with a credit average and no fails will ensure direct entry into year 1 of the Bachelor of Design (Communication Design), Bachelor of Design (Interior Design), Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) or Bachelor of Design (Multimedia Design)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.

Applications must be made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).

After applying to VTAC applicants MUST contact the Department of Arts to receive further information with regard to a supplementary application form.

Applicants will be asked to supply evidence through the presentation of a folio of art work of their artistic ability at interview. Your folio should include examples of the following: observational drawing, developmental sketches and workbooks, photography, life drawings and/or graphic design work.  The criteria used for assessing the art work are: manipulative and technical art skills, accuracy, sense of design, proportion and colour, neatness, and acuteness of observation.
