The Master of Information Technology (Professional Computing) provides an opportunity for participants to undertake a program of advanced studies in IT with an emphasis on enhancing the ability of graduates to gain professional employment in the IT industry. The program is designed for those who have undertaken previous university-level studies in IT, equivalent to at least one year of an Australian bachelor degree. Students are recommended to focus their studies in either web application development, information systems, or network design and security.

The Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies is fortunate to encompass all of the major disciplines in ICT including computing, software engineering, information systems and telecommunications. This unique structure provides students with a broad range of study choices enabling selection of units of study across all disciplines.

Students with a degree in a non-IT discipline wishing to undertake IT studies should enrol in the Master of Technology (Information Technology). Students with a bachelor degree in IT recognised as equivalent to an Australian IT bachelor degree should enrol in the Master of Information Technology.

The Master of Information Technology (Professional Computing) program consists of 12 units of study (150 credit points), equivalent to two years of full-time study. The program is run in two stages: Stage 1 is foundation studies and Stage 2 provides advanced studies. Postgraduate units of study in the Faculty of ICT are categorised as Level 2 or 3.

Stage 1 of the program involves four elective Level 2 units of study (50 credit points).

Stage 2 of the program involves eight units of study (100 credit points) comprising a core of two Level 3 units of study (25 credit points), up to two elective Level 2 units of study (25 credit points) and at least four elective Level 3 units of study (50 credit points).

The program is accredited with a standard full-time* study pattern of 37.5 credit points (three units of study) each semester, allowing for the 150 credit point program to be completed over two years. Students who wish to study four units in any semester or throughout the program, will be permitted to do so with permission of the program coordinator.

Part-time mode includes the possiblity of studying one unit of study at a time*. Evening classes are available in most units of study in Semester 1 (February), Semester 2 (July) and the October teaching period.

Please note: Some units of study are subject to quotas and minimum enrolment requirements. Not all units of study are available every semester or in the evening, and changes in program structure occur from time to time.

*International students are required to study full-time.
