The Graduate Certificate of Professional Accounting is designed for students who wish to obtain a sound introduction to concepts and procedures in accounting and finance. The program develops the technical, practical, analytical and creative skills necessary to support a successful career in accounting and finance. It provides an entry level into tertiary study and the ability to obtain a tertiary qualification for appropriately qualified candidates. Successful completion of any four of the 12 core Master of Professional Accounting units of study (subject to meeting co-requisite requirements) completes the graduate certificate stage of the nested program. Further study will lead to the Graduate Diploma of Professional Accounting and either the Master of Professional Accounting or Master of Practising Accounting.
At the completion of the program graduates can expect to: have broadened their skills already gained in an undergraduate course or have developed vocational knowledge and skills in a new professional area have developed the basic technical and practical skills necessary to support a successful career in accounting and finance be equipped with suitable skills to continue with further postgraduate study in accounting
Students normally enrol in four units of study per semester for full-time study or two units of study per semester for part-time study, undertaking the equivalent of three hours per unit of study per week. Full-time students have classes on weekdays for 12 weeks each semester. Classes for part-time students commence at 8.00am on Saturdays and are taught in six-hour blocks in alternate weeks over a 12-week semester. Examinations are conducted at the end of the semester in the formal university examination period. Part-time students may apply to undertake weekday classes. Students holding an international student visa are required to study full-time.
The graduate certificate requires satisfactory completion of four units of study from the following list (subject to pre/co-requisites): HBC606 Accounting Principles HBC607 Accounting Information Systems HBC608 Business Modelling and Analysis HBL606 Australian Contract Law HBL607 Australian Company Law HBC609 Corporate Financial Management HBC610 Financial Reporting HBC611 Managerial Accounting HBE613 Economics HBC614 Company Auditing HBC615 Financial Accounting Theory HBC616 Income Tax Law
The accounting program provides an avenue for graduates to achieve professional recognition and help fill the shortage of professionally recognised accountants. As many candidates may already be established in a business career, the key vocational outcomes will arise from better current job performance together with new opportunities opening in the accounting and finance areas.
Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in any discipline other than accounting from a recognised university or equivalent institution. Places will also be available to applicants without tertiary qualifications but who have at least five years approved work experience.
