The Graduate Certificate of Business Management (Project Management) has been designed to meet the needs of practising project officers and managers who want to pursue specialist study and develop skills at a managerial level. The program is targeted at: Individuals currently working as project practitioners in a project-oriented environment wishing to expand their knowledge and skills to enable promotion to project managementProject managers wanting to strengthen their knowledge and skills, and gain formal recognition of these skills, by attaining a postgraduate specialist qualificationGraduate and undergraduate students in related studies wanting to broaden their knowledge and skill set by attaining a qualification in this discipline This is a postgraduate program accredited by Swinburne’s Faculty of Higher Education, Lilydale and delivered by Swinburne's School of Business. Graduates achieving a credit average, or above may be eligible for entry to the Master of Business Management ( L7801).
The program aims to provide high-level knowledge with practical skill applications that are relevant to project practitioners and project managers. The four core subjects address sound project management principles; high-level project implementation, execution skills and knowledge; and project integration management skills, essential for the role of the project manager. At the completion of the program it is expected that graduates will be able to: Prepare a project briefDesign and prepare a project plan including scheduling, resources, costs, quality assurance, procurement and risk analysis design and implement a project monitoring and performance measurement systemAnalyse project performance and close a projectApply the above knowledge and skills in a real project management setting
The Graduate Certificate consists of four units of study (subjects). All four units must be satisfactorily completed to attain the Graduate Certificate award. Each unit involves 36 hours of class time, usually studied for three hours on one night per week for one semester, or as fortnightly Saturday workshops. The Graduate Certificate is available part-time with all classes scheduled outside of normal working hours. Graduate Certificates may also be studied full-time depending on demand. Note that international students must study full-time. This Graduate Certificate is also available online. The Graduate Certificate can be undertaken as the first stage of the Graduate Diploma of Business Management, which involves a further four units of study, or the Master of Business Management , which involves a further eight units of study.

Most graduates will already be established in business careers, so through successful completion of their Graduate Certificate can expect better current job performance, promotion, and new opportunities in a broader business and international business environment. The expected area and level of employment for graduates will be for project officers to move into project management roles and for project managers to take on more senior responsibilities, or coordination and integration of a number of projects.
Graduates may be eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) and the Project Management Institute (PMI), depending on work experience.

Entry into the Graduate Certificate will be available to applicants with an approved undergraduate degree or advanced diploma from a recognised tertiary institution or approved equivalent, together with relevant industry experience, preferably at least 12 months. Applicants without a degree are required to have significant relevant business experience, normally at least four years.
Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this program may be granted ‘credit’ and/or entry into the program with ‘advanced standing’. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Graduates achieving a credit average, or above, are eligible for entry into the Graduate Diploma (stage 2) and Master (stage 3) of Business Management.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.
